Thomas Nordlund will release his second album as a bandleader, “Miles Left Behind,” in November.
On “Miles Left Behind,” Nordlund combines the sound of his tube-distorted guitar with real-time sample-triggering and a trio comprised of Ben Abrahamson on banjo, Doan Roessler on upright bass, and Zach Schmidt on drums.
“Miles Left Behind” finds Nordlund developing the approach defined in his solo debut, 2015’s “Divide Avenue”, which captured a baritone-guitar-led sextet exploring diatonic harmony, lyrical melody, and slow burning improvisation through compositions based on non-standard forms.
Tracked in a single four-hour session, “Miles Left Behind” incorporates alternate time signatures, more adventurous improvisation, and layers of atmospheric sound design into compositions with increased structural complexity and an expanded harmonic palette while retaining lyrical melodic writing.
Produced by Nordlund, “Miles Left Behind” was recorded, engineered, and mixed by Jason McGlone at The Hideaway Studios in Minneapolis, Minnesota and mastered by Rob Schlette at Anthem Mastering in St. Louis, Missouri.
